WE BELIVE THAT...
-
Wisdom (i.e., knowledge of and from God) comes from wholeness (i.e. holistic development of an individual).
-
Basic education is a potent tool which can contribute to a person’s formation and leadership development.
-
The child is an active learner if his/her nature, own stage and pace of development, together with his/her interests are taken into consideration. This is the reason why Developmentally Appropriate Practices as approach to teaching is very important. He/She, too, must not be grade-conscious but learning-focused and driven by the desire to apply what he has learned.
-
The teacher is not the “master” of the classroom but mere facilitator, guide, and motivator. He/She carefully plans and prepares varied materials and activities that can truly enrich the experiences of the learner.
-
The teacher and the parents are effective partners in the education of the child so there should be close collaboration between the school and the home.
-
The school environment, which very much like a home, is beneficial to a child since the warmth and safety of a family atmosphere provide him/her the needed courage to learn (or unlearn) so many things in life.
-
The school has to show to the child that it is life and not just a preparation for his next level of formal schooling. In doing so, he/she can clearly see and appreciate the “connection” between schooling and life.
-
Over and above all these, the school’s ultimate goal is to honor the Savior both in words and work.
THE LOGO
The logo is circular in shape with the name of the institution, “SOPHIA SCHOOL”, printed on the imaginary upper-half circle arch; the year it was founded, “1995”, on the horizontal endpoints of the diameter; and the school motto, “ Wisdom through wholeness”, on the imaginary lower half- circle arch.
It is borderless to connote Sophia School’s attempt to go beyond the dated and irrelevant beliefs, practices, and traditions of a typical school. This is also to emphasize the school‘s intention to further the thought that education is not only for one’s personal gains but also for him/her to be of service to his/her society.
The internal part of the seal, on the other hand, is the depiction of the school motto. Thus, the small green circle symbolizes the person’s humanity which, if formed on its entirety, would emit blue rays that represent God’s divinity.
Meanwhile, directly above the seal are the letters “IHS” which is the monogram for Jesus and in Sophian context, stands for the phrase “In Honor of the Savior”. This is to acknowledge that He is our school’s highest source of guidance and blessings and it is only fitting and proper, that our school, in return, should extol Him in its every word and work.
THE MASCOT
The mascot of the school is a monarch butterfly which stands for total formation, developmental appropriateness, leadership, and change.
The school has two patrons. The primary one is the Holy Child Jesus, who is the guide, protector, and perfect model of children whose feast day falls in January of every year.
The second one, meanwhile, is the Adult Jesus among Children. This is to emphasize to students that they can be like Him, in the sense that He did not remain as a child but grew as an adult who was willing to perform His mission in life. His special day is every Good Friday of the year.
The school likewise pays homage to the monogram of Jesus which is “IHS”.
